Issue #175 -- 06/15/2004
Editor: Tom R. Halfhill
In this issue:
ARM’s Configurable OptimoDE
Max Baron - Principal Analyst {06/07/2004}
Parallel-execution processors that take performance
beyond the reach of the fastest DSP have been around for quite a few years now.
New parallel-engine offerings appear every year, enticing the engineering mind
with their creative configurations, flexibility, and novelty. However, most of
these devices, ideal as they seem to be for attaining the highest performance
at low power, are still waiting to be designed into products. They are new and
differ from one another. They require engineers to dedicate time to study and
to compare them. Moreover, on top of everything, most of their programming and/or
configuration development tools are still at the inception stage.
On May 18, 2004, at In-Stat/MDR’s Embedded Processor Forum (EPF 2004), Koen Van
Nieuwenhove, product development manager with ARM’s Belgium Data Engine Division,
presented OptimoDE, ARM’s configurable, highly parallel VLIW data engine—a vote
of confidence in the future of parallel engines by ARM, the leader in low-power
processors. ARM enters the market of highly parallel processors with a core based
on architectural concepts that have previously been used by others (good news)
and with development tools aimed at the engineer’s existing expertise in the design
of hardware and software.
